WEIJA, GHANA — The Ghana Police Service has launched a high-priority investigation into a fatal shooting incident involving a police officer that occurred on Sunday, January 19, 2026, in the Tetegu area near Weija.

According to preliminary information released by the Service, the tragedy unfolded following an alleged heated confrontation between a policewoman and a taxi driver.

The Incident

Eyewitness reports indicate an altercation arose between the officer and the driver, who was operating a Hyundai i10 taxi. During the encounter, the officer reportedly discharged her firearm, striking the driver.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Police Hospital for emergency medical attention. However, authorities confirmed that he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Officer Injured in Aftermath

In a chaotic turn of events following the shooting, further details indicate that the policewoman sustained serious injuries while attempting to leave the scene. She was reportedly struck by a passing vehicle, suffering significant trauma to her head and both legs.

She is currently admitted to the hospital, where she is receiving medical care under police guard.

Evidence Recovered

Crime scene investigators who processed the area have recovered several key items of ballistic evidence. These include:

  • One live 9mm round
  • A pistol magazine
  • One spent 9mm cartridge
