'Tuobodom': The Unforeseen Community Living in the Shadow of Tema

TUOBODOM is a migrant community located within Tema Community 12 in the Tema Metropolitan District of the Greater Accra Region, Ghana.
While Tema is generally recognised for its planned layout, organised housing, and industrial infrastructure—having been developed as a model industrial city during the administration of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in the 1950s—the Tuobodom community presents a sharp, unforeseen contrast to this image.
Origins: Strength and Identity
The name Tuobodom originates from the Akan people of the Bono East Region, where the main Tuobodom town is located. The term is derived from two words:
- “Tuo”, meaning gun.
- “Bodom”, meaning dog beads.
Together, the name symbolises strength and identity. The original Tuobodom is the capital of the Techiman North District and is widely known for its strong agricultural base.
Migration from the Bono East Region to Tema began mainly in the 1980s, largely due to declining agricultural productivity and limited economic opportunities at home. Tema, being an industrial city with a major port, attracted many of these migrants. Some eventually settled in Community 12 because of its closeness to the port and the availability of manual work.
A Community of Wood and Resilience
Due to financial constraints, the early settlers constructed homes using wooden planks as they could not afford formal accommodation. Over time, families were formed, children were born, and livelihoods were established, leading to the creation of this distinct community.
Today, housing structures remain mostly wooden, often without foundations, proper sanitation facilities, or access to potable water.
“Overcrowding is common, with two to seven individuals sharing a single room, and many households lack electricity.”
The area is also prone to waterlogging, especially during the rainy season. Residents largely depend on manual and informal employment, including mechanics, hairdressing, petty trading, and other small-scale jobs. Demographically, the population structure shows a higher proportion of women, estimated at about 60% females and 40% males.
Health and Environmental Challenges
Health challenges are prevalent in the community due to poor sanitation, overcrowding, and environmental conditions. Common health issues include teenage pregnancy, malaria, acute malnutrition, and respiratory tract infections such as tuberculosis.
Seasonal flooding further increases health risks, but the threat of fire is even more immediate. In September 2024, the community experienced a major fire outbreak that destroyed approximately 600 structures. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded, although many residents were displaced.
Conclusion
In all, although Tuobodom remains unforeseen and often overlooked by the bustling industrial city that surrounds it, it is a living and resilient community. Despite the harsh living conditions, it has become a source of home, hope, and survival for its residents.
