National Sanitation Day: Nsawam Shuts Down for Massive Clean-Up

NSAWAM — Residents of Nsawam and Adoagyiri on Saturday joined communities across Ghana to observe the first National Sanitation Day (NSD) of the year, as part of renewed government efforts to improve cleanliness, public health, and environmental responsibility.
The exercise, which began at 6:00 a.m. and ran through the morning, saw shops, markets, and business premises closed in compliance with a presidential directive and municipal bye-laws.
The temporary shutdown allowed residents, traders, and workers to pause their economic activities and take part in communal clean-up activities across the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality.
A Community Mobilised
Led by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Department of the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly (NAMA), the exercise focused on emptying choked drains, sweeping public spaces, and collecting refuse from high-traffic areas.
Particular attention was given to strategic locations where waste had accumulated during the Christmas and New Year festivities:
- The Nsawam-Adoagyiri main road.
- The Central Market.
- Nearby lorry parks.
Education and Enforcement
Environmental health officers were deployed not only to supervise the clean-up but also to educate residents on proper waste disposal practices.
“Officers cautioned against dumping refuse into gutters, a practice that contributes to flooding and the spread of sanitation-related diseases, especially as the rainy season approaches.”
Municipal authorities emphasized that participation in National Sanitation Day is mandatory. Residents who failed to comply risk fines or community service, as the Assembly seeks to enforce sanitation as a key component of local governance and public accountability.
Logistics and Support
To support the exercise, Zoomlion trucks and Assembly waste compaction vehicles were deployed to transport collected waste to approved disposal sites, including Adipa for solid waste.
Officials described the exercise as successful and urged residents to make cleanliness a daily habit, not just a monthly ritual.
