Desperation at the Bus Stop: Commuters Turn to Cargo Trucks Amidst Accra Transport Shortage

The crisis, which peaked during the Thursday rush hour, left thousands stranded for hours. At Achimota, the usual trotro queues vanished as commercial buses failed to appear. In their place, frustrated commuters began boarding open top cargo trucks vehicles typically reserved for timber or industrial goods risking their safety to avoid being stranded overnight.

Eyewitnesses described the situation as “survival of the fittest”.The shortage is reportedly linked to massive gridlock on major arteries like the N1 and N6, which has crippled turnaround times for drivers. Additionally, some transport unions have hinted at a quiet protest by drivers over rising fuel and operational costs.

While the GPRTU has yet to issue a formal statement, the reality on the ground is stark. The sight of office workers and traders perched in the back of goods trucks has sparked intense debate over the city’s failing transport policy.

As of Friday morning, the queues remain long. Until more buses return to their routes, the cargo truck alternative remains a risky lifeline for many. Accra’s residents continue to navigate a city that is moving, but at a high cost to their dignity and safety
